Carolina Distillery Barrel Brand
The first stop on our trip was to visit some of our friends at Carolina Distillery. These guys make an excellent Brandy.
Carolina Distillery's Fermenters
Its hard to consider the scale but I've seen small swimming pools if that gives you an idea.
Cell tower close up
I just thought this was interesting.
First day in KY
We arrived in Frankfort KY on Monday night and woke up on Tuesday to this mess.
Snow covered contry side
Tuesday was the day we had dedicated to doing part of the bourbon trail. This snow made it difficult but there were some amazing sites to see along the way.
Four Roses Distillery Entrance
Our first stop of the day was Four Roses. This was by far the largest distillery I have ever seen.
Four Roses Barrel House
They were closed!
Unfortunately the snow caused the tour guides to not show up. We were met at the door with the bad news. Maybe next time.
Buffalo Trace Distillery
The only distillery that weathered the snow was These guys. We got here just in time for their awesome hard had tour
Around Buffalo trace
This place is over 100 acres!
Low wine still
Some of their old equipment. This used to be a continuous column still.
These mash tanks are 60,000 gallons each. One pipe is filling 40,000 gallons of new mash and the other is filling 20,000 gallons of sour mash.
Its funny that this awesome still is only used for test runs.
narrow passageways throughout
These guys are pumping out 27,000 gallons a day!
Continuous Column still
Vodka still control computer
Automation at its finest
Buffalo Trace recycles
This extremely large machine is the first step in drying the spent mash back out to be reused.
This is where they shake the mash to send the liquid one way and the solid the other way
Squeeze the mash
Here they press the mash to get more liquid out.
Here the grain is completely dried out and ready to be reused for things like animal feed
Inside Buffalo Trace's Barrel House
Ole Smokey's pot still
I tasted all of them...
